Pool Safety and The Responsibility Of Ownership

Pools and Spas are very popular in Florida and will add to your home’s value if properly maintained and updated over the years. When you take on pool ownership, however, you take on all of the responsibilities of ownership. In this issue we will talk about one of the these responsibilities……Safety.

It is well documented that young children have a higher drowning risk than any other group, due to their impulsive and curious natures. Almost 1 in every 4 drownings happen at a family gathering near a pool. These statistics, as well as a moving personal story, is what motivated Karen Cohn to make it her mission to educate and advocate for Pool Safety across the U.S. She is the driving force behind The Zac Foundation that helps advance water safety. There are many things that a homeowner can do to help prevent drownings in their own pool. We have included information from The Zac Foundation website and felt it important to share it with you in an effort to make a difference.

SAFETY - Your Responsibility

  • Designate an adult water watcher - This person should be free from any distractions. No phones, reading, or other activities that would hinder their ability to give the swimmer their full attention.

  • Install a 4-5 foot fence around your pool with a self-latching lock

  • Install an alarm on all doors and windows that lead to the pool

  • Install a pool alarm - Some alarms will alert you to motion near the pool or when the water has been disturbed.

  • Learn CPR and teach children to swim

  • Pool Drain-All adults should know how to turn off electricity to the pool and drains should be equipped with at least 2 layers of protection to reduce the risk of hair or a body part blocking the pool’s drain. (Drains cause 100s of pounds of force requiring multiple adults to remove someone if they are trapped.)

  • Remove any obstacles that children can climb to get over the fencing around a pool and remove toys, that might encourage children, when no one else is in the pool.

Doing your part

It is the responsibility of everyone to do their part to make pools safe and fun for everyone. Please take the time to find more information at The Zac Foundation.
